“There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so”- essay

“Your mind is like this water, my friend. When it is agitated, it becomes difficult to see. But if you allow it to settle, the answer becomes clear.” affirms Rafiki a supporting character in Disney's 1994 animated feature film, “The Lion King”.

Overthinking can influence your mentality, behaviour, attitude and in most cases, in a bad way. It's tough to face off your mind, the hardest enemy in a fight, and it's more painful when you lose, when you let yourself be controlled by your own conscientiousness. That inner voice, which doesn’t let you relax and which always feeds those feelings of self-doubt: “Am I doing a good job?”, “Will everything work out?” “When will my hard work pay off?” “Should I quit?” “Am I capable of succeeding?”. Oh, God! Such a tiring process of thinking, analysing and convincing yourself that you are brave enough to achieve something.

What is really this voice? A positive stream of conscientiousness or the opposite? It depends, it can become your best friend or your biggest fear. Try to pay attention closely to what triggers it and learn how to cope with or control it as well as you can!

“Forget the mistake, remember the lesson!” is my favourite quote, without any doubt. It inspires and helps me to rethink and to transform this process of failing into a learning one. With no pressure upon me, I am free to fulfil my mission and to set a new goal. Like David Goggins, whose mentality and hunger for records and new challenges breaks all the human limits. Did I say human? No, he is an alien, for sure. Thor with new superpowers: perseverance, hard work, dedication and the most essential one, the unbeatable mind. Our purpose for today, emphasised throughout this speech, is to foster the idea that one can win this battle against their doubts and too critical thinking.

How do you conduct a conversation with your inner voice?

You ask: “Why do you always hurt me so?”

The voice responds: “Because you let me.”

You try again: “But you are part of me.”

A riddle: “And that’s my power.”

How should we start solving this puzzle, what does this mean? Ah, a dilemma again! Our heart will always want to quit, will always be trying to take control, to be the captain of your decisions. No! This is not going to happen! Your disciplined mind is the player on this life field, if you choose to train and to improve it, day by day, impossible is nothing, only a few words on the page. You have to grow and to learn from all your hardships. If you don’t and you remain down, you deny yourself the oppportunity to enjoy the good ones to come.

Perhaps, our mind is that inner voice, which never stops telling us the truth and forcing us to get back to work. And the enemy is still it, our conscientiousness, when it’s controlled by our heart. Get on the stage, be aware and choose the right mentor!

Last, but no least: Why are we struggling so much? I’ve always said: set major goals, don’t be afraid to believe in your powers and capacity, stop the process when it’s done, not when you’re tired. When these three crucial conditions are met, nothing can stop you from embracing the victory. The moment that you’ve always dreamt of is there to be taken. Do it for you, for your family and friends, for your team and coach, make that step and be prepared to shine. Even in your darkest period, when you are alone, broke or hopeless, continue.

Don't be afraid to start over again. This time you’re not starting from scratch, you’re starting from experience.

“It was an illusion, that's only your perspective on things, you misjudged everything, you surely disappointed them…” one or some or all these doubts gravitate in your head and it never stops. Your inner voice acted in accordance with what your heart told you, and it is always ready to trap and not let go of you. That’s the definition of overthinking, a puzzle piece, another and another and another…

Suddenly, you realise that all these worries affect your life: friendships, the relationship with your family, your mental health, your general attitude, courage, self opinion and opportunities. You can lose something that you really valued and you really dreamt to achieve, just by hearing and listening to other’s misconstructed beliefs of you. As a response: you can’t be perfect, but you can be authentic. In three words: just be yourself.

Is it good or bad? You don’t have to find the answer now. It takes time and a long journey, perhaps one’s entire life, until they can totally understand the meaning of this essay’s topic. For now, you remain with my current perspective, of the 14 years old version of Briana.
